'Connections' Auditions
In order to start the auditions
for ‘Connections’, we picked out a character we liked, and we thought we wanted
to audition for. So, I looked thought the script and had spotted the character ‘Kobe’,
he seemed interesting to me for many reasons. One being when I had read through
the script and seen the difference between the younger ‘Kobe’ and older ‘Kobe’,
there was a massive change in character between the two. After everything the
character had been through, the traumatic things that had happened and how that
had changed him so much from when he was younger. For instance, he went
straight to the path of finding ‘God’ and changing himself, to move away from
the life he had before. As he knew not only himself, but his grandmother
couldn’t cope with it anymore. Moreover, as his grandmother becomes ill and get
worse and worse, his fear of his past returning to ruin is life once more and his
fears for his grandmother’s health increase in turn.
Therefore, for the audition we
had to look at a couple of scenes and work on them as a group. The play only
works if there is good chemistry between the actors, it needs to feel natural,
like they have been through all this hardship in the past four years of their
lives together. So, I was going to audition for older ‘Kobe’, he had been
through all this misfortune and change in his life from the past and I needed
to be abler to show this in my performance. I thought about how awkward he
would feel to meet all these people from years ago. How he doesn’t really want
to be involved in their lives anymore, he wants his life to be separated from
everything else.
We were also given the option to
pick a second character to audition for. I chose ‘Zafer’, who had cancer and I
felt like you could bring a lot to the character as an actor. For me the
character has a lot of emotion, and I really liked that idea. I wanted to
explore it further. I auditioned for this role with Charley, who was playing my
sister ‘Stefie’. Now, Charley and I have paired up together quite a bit in
previous performances, usually as a couple and not siblings. Nonetheless, the
chemistry still must have worked even in a different context, as a lot of
people liked our version of the two siblings. Even though we didn't acquire
the roles we wanted, on the understudy cast we did manage to be paired together
as the brother and sister, so that was good. I feel we can bring a lot to these
characters, as we have done previously.
